quilting and encaustic weekend
Hello darlings! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I had a productive weekend working on a new quilt and experimenting with encaustic- the process of painting with hot wax.
Here is how I started with the quilt:

I pieced 1.5 x 3.5″ strips together. My idea for this is that it would look like a running stitch of color.

The piecing took way longer than I expected! I even cut the white strips in between so that I could piece those together as well. This whole strip will be placed about 3/4 of the way towards the bottom of the quilt and the rest will be white.

I love the way the piecing looks on just the white strips and Im planning on piecing the rest of the white areas also to break things up a little.
I have been wanting to try encaustic for almost 2 years now. Last weekend SCAD had an art supply expo and Enkaustikos, an encaustic supplier, was there and showed me what materials to use and how to use them.

Encaustic on wood.

Paper, razor blades, encaustic on wood.

Encaustic, bird bones, feathers, wire on wood.
I love the texture of the wax. I am going to keep experimenting with collage elements and wax. I’d love to hear what you think about the progress of the quilt and the encaustic work!

This quilt is looking great so far. I love the color choice- it will look great on a all white background!
I love everything thats happening on this page. are you thinking about combining quilting with encaustic painting? could be a crazy outcome!
I absolutely LOVE the quilt. You are right on with the color! Howevern, the encaustic seems very muddy. Have you thought about doing thinner more translucent layers with more layering of paper or fabric, etc. For example: paper layer, thin wax layer, tea bag layer, wax layer, fabric, thin wax, etc. Think about it as a collage, only the wax is one element. It could be a wonderful way od playing with translucency of seeing layers underneath other layers. It feels too waxy at the moment.
I love this quilt! I can’t wait to see it finished and in person-I also need to see the encaustic painting in person – can’t get the feel of it from a picture. You are amazing!
I love the quilt – I would totally buy that and pay obscene amounts of money for it.
Encaustic is the best, I love the way it makes my studio smell! just did one this w/end that seems too waxy – where with another I couldn’t really see the wax. I think it has to do with the texture of the collage itself? Maybe lots of texture=waxy?
You have been such a busy bee. Its all I can do this week just to get my studio cleaned up and ready for open studio night.
I love the quilt. I think Anna is right about the encaustics..but i think that you just started with them and you will find your own refinement as you use them more. I think using primarily white with tints or small spots of color with the bird bones is what i envisioned you might do with it…
